Description
Treasure Point, topped by The Sphinx, is on the southern side of the eastern entrance to the Valley of the Kings, in the Mugii Murum-ban State Conservation Area, about 10 km east of Capertee. We drive by 4WD up the Genowlan Mountain Trail, and park near The Grotto. We then follow the firetrail to The Genowlan Trig, and from there, follow the escarpment east, with spectacular views over the Wolgan Valley, and Pantoneys Crown. We then make our way thru pagodas to Treasure Point and the Sphinx, which we climb for more spectacular views. We then follow the southern side of Valley of the Kings back to the firetrail, staying near the rim, and not descending into the valley, and return to the cars. About 2/3rds of this walk is exploratory, and I have walked in the nearby area. I have a Lidar map with 2 metres contours and a gps trace for navigation, and track notes from Walk 19 in the Mugii Murum-ban book, by Keats, Fox and Bolotin. I expect the walk will be about 7km, 6 hrs and 300m in ascents, with moderate rock scrambling and exposure. While I have specified a 5 H grade, I hope to find a route that is about grade 4 MH. Numbers may be limited by a second 4WD being available. I will make 2 trips with mine, if necessary.
