Description
Death Trap Canyon is a short canyon on the Newnes plateau near the Galah Mt turn off. Despite its name, Death Trap is so much fun! There are jumps, slides and one abseil (16m) in a waterfall. A short rainforest section leads to the “Death Trap”, a narrow crack which is the only way out. A huge overhang cave provides a pleasant setting for lunch then we exit past a great waterfall into a narrow slot. The canyon is only two km from where we park the cars. This canyon is suitable for less experienced canyoners. You must be a competent creek swimmer and confident with jumps and slides. The biggest jump is only 3 m. Death Trap canyon is also called “Sheep Dip”. To avoid confusion, I refer to this canyon as Death Trap. It is not the short canyon that joins Rocky Creek. An excellent video by Grant Elliot is included with the photos. The Bureau of Meteorology forecast for Newnes Plateau, Wed 28 Jan is : Temperature 10 to 26 degrees, no rain max wind speed 6 km/hr
