Description
Alcatraz is on the Newnes Plateau in the upper area of Carne Creek. A short walk in through spectacular pagoda country leads to the only abseil. It's down a curving waterfall into a cup shaped chamber with a letter box slit exit. You will get wet! Excitement is assured. The return to the vehicles is through cliffs with more wonderful views. On the way out we visit the disused prison site that gave Alcatraz its name. A short drive to Goochs Crater follows then an abseil into a waist deep pool in another narrow chamber that is Billabong Canyon.
