Description
Whirlpool is a less often visited canyon on the north side of the Wollangambe. Why less visited? Perhaps the 3 descents and 3 ascents have something to do with it. It will be a 9-10 hour day, 15 km with ~700 m elevation, so an early start is needed. We will meet at Mt Wilson fire shed at 7.45 am so we can be walking by 8.00 am. After descending the Wollangambe 1 entrance track to the horseshoe bend, we take the Geronimo track up the other side, descend again to the start of Geronimo, then ascend the ridge and bush bash 1 km further west to the start. There are about 5 abseils up to 15 m, a few short narrow sections and a long swim back along the Wollangambe with a few boulder fields to negotiate. Flotation for the Wollangambe is recommended and some extra snacks. Limited to a small group of 4 to stay mobile. Must be fit enough for a long, strenuous day.
