Emergency Procedures
UBMBC leaders and members are encouraged to be aware of risks associated with club activities, to identify potential hazards and to take action to remove or mitigate risks.
All members are required to carry a personal first aid kit when participating in club activities. Nationally accredited Remote Area First Aid courses are organized regularly by UBMBC. Members are required to have a personal Emergency Contact Form with them on club activities.
Leaders are required to submit an Activity Record email message before each activity. The Activity Record email account activity-record@ubmbc.org.au replaces the old Late Returns email. The message should include a list of participants and a description of the activity. UBMBC committee members have access to Activity Record email messages.
Groups participating in club activities are required to carry at least one personal locator beacon (PLB), InReach or similar satellite communication device. They must also have a mobile phone, a map (possibly a phone map) and a compass (possibly a phone compass).
The leader is responsible for the initial management of an emergency that occurs during a club activity. If help is required, the leader (or participant nominated by the leader) should try to contact Search and Rescue Authorities by phone. If there is no phone reception, satellite communication should be used. (Note that it is not possible to send a text message to 000). Alternatively, a PLB could be activated. If more than one PLB is available, activate more than one. As soon as communication can be established, the leader and group members should inform participants’ designated emergency contacts registered on the UBMBC website: (Membership/ Member Info/Check Member Details). The leader should inform a member of the UBMBC committee that an incident requiring emergency assistance has occurred.
If a group is delayed (more than 5 hours late) or benighted, the leader (or participant nominated by the leader) should contact the participants’ designated emergency contacts and a member of UBMBC committee.
If the group is delayed and no communication is received by 9 am the next day, a designated emergency contact could contact a UBMBC Committee member listed in Contacts on the club website. Note that committee members may not always be available to receive a call or answer a text or email message.
“Near misses” should be reported to the UBMBC Secretary. Review of near misses by the Club Risk Management Subcommittee may prevent a similar incident from occurring.
Leaders must report Incidents (with witness statements) to the UBMBC secretary within preferably 24 hours of the incident occurring, using the incident report form on the UBMBC website.
